It’s time for the age-old adage was can’t seem to move past. Every year without fail we find ourselves on either end of the spectrum; to be or not to be a whole new person. Those who were alive in the magical power of resolutions to fix everything and those that don’t scoff at it at every New Year’s Eve party.

Whether you fall into the former or latter, here’s our take to help you in 2019!

1. Instead of “New”, Try “Improved”

Although “New” and “Improved” are often said together, it makes no sense. You can either be “New” or “Improved”. If you want our advice, stick to “Improved.” “New” disregards your years of existence and doesn’t acknowledge all the work it took to get you here (whether it was a conscious decision or not).

2. Come to Peace with the Things You Can’t Change

The hardest one on here is definitely trying not to “fix” things. If you have a Type-A personality then you know what we mean! There’s a constant inkling in our minds to fix anything and everything…. even if it’s not broken. This coming year, let that go. It won’t change itself, but you have a whole year to try!

3. Set Realistic Goals

Ever created a to-do list that even the most productive person would not be able to get done in an unrealistically short amount of time? We’ve all been there. Whether you’re an overachiever or a procrastinator, pace yourself. Create realistic targets and allow yourself enough time.

Pro-Tip: Breakdown your goals into steps so that you can visualize how long it will take you to do a good job.

4. Allow Room for Mistakes

In this overarching to-do list, there probably wasn’t much room for error, was there? Yet as human making mistakes (and hopefully learning from them) is a part of life. Allowing a little or a lot of space (depending on the task at hand) for fixing your mistakes, will make sure you don’t eat into your next project/task.

5. Keep Track of all the Good Things

It’s easy at the end of the year to feel like it wasn’t the best year or sometimes even the worst year. Whether your Instagram feed has quotes like “2016 2017 2018 was the worst year” or just a pessimistic friend that keeps on droning about it, it’s easy to get caught up in that idea. In 2019, keep a note of all the good things (small or big) that happen to you, as they happen. If you ever feel the year isn’t going your way, just whip it out and read at random.

What do you want to carry into 2019 and what do you leave behind in 2018?
